Talavera Bathroom Sinks

All our talavera sinks are “baked” in rustic kilns in the Mexican town of Dolores Hidalgo, a north-central part of the Mexican state Guanajuato. Dolores Hidalgo was originally known as Dolores until one early morning on September 16, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo stood on the steps of his parish church and uttered his famous cry for Mexican independence, "Grito de Dolores". Once Mexico had achieved their independence, the town was renamed 'Dolores Hidalgo' in his honor. Terra Artesana is proud to be keeping the Talavera tradition alive, one that has evolved subtley with the influences of the Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Arabic and Egyptian cultures over the centuries. Talavera was born from the Spanish pottery tradition called Majolica. The word Majolica originated in Italy and describes a process the Italians used in the 14th Century to produce ceramics. It was the Spanish who introduced the Talavera art into Mexico in the 16th Century and it was quickly absorbed by Mexican artisans, evolving to the Mexican Talavera craft we see today.
